World Cancer Day is an international day observed every 4 February
Its purpose: to raise awareness about cancer, encourage its prevention, and mobilise action to address the global cancer epidemic.
Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, gathering communities, organisations and individuals in schools, businesses, hospitals, marketplaces, parks, community halls, places of worship – in the streets and online – acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the global impact of cancer.
The Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals Trust serves our community with the Edward Jenner Unit in Gloucester supporting a variety of Blood Cancers and the Oncology Unit in Cheltenham is a designated Regional Cancer Centre and has provided specialist cancer care for people in our community for more than 60 years supporting hundreds of thousands of local people to receive the best care there is to offer.
Many of the current facilities are over 25 years old and a new modern building is needed to care for future generations.
That is why, on what is World Cancer Day we are doubling down on our efforts to support this improvement programme so that future generations of cancer patients can not only receive world class care but also in surroundings that support their wellbeing.
View these exciting plans as part of a virtual reality (VR) tour, which helps to show what the final building could look like.
This is in partnership with the local NHS Charity, which has its’ own Big Space Cancer Appeal for the refurbishment of the existing centre, required to cope with the annual 8% increase in patient throughput (which currently stands at 5000 new patients per year).
Rotary funds will be specifically targeted at the Centre’s ‘Focus Centre‘ which improves the welfare and mental health of patients and their families through provision of holistic services and by signposting to other supporting agencies and charities. Read more…
